Will Neymar Announce Retirement this Year?

Brazilian football star Neymar has revealed that he may consider retirement by the end of this year, despite recently extending his contract with his childhood club Santos. The 34-year-old forward returned to Santos in January 2025 and played a crucial role in helping the team remain in Brazil’s top division, scoring five goals in their final five matches to secure their position.

However, Neymar has faced ongoing injury struggles in recent seasons, raising doubts about his participation in the upcoming World Cup. He recently spoke to a Brazilian online channel and admitted uncertainty about his future in football, saying he is taking his career “year by year.” He added that when December arrives, he might feel ready to retire, depending on his physical condition and personal decisions.

The current year holds special importance for Neymar, as it is significant for both his club and the Brazilian national team, with the World Cup approaching. Although he has successfully undergone knee surgery and holds the record as Brazil’s all-time leading goal scorer with 79 international goals, he has not represented the national team since October 2023. His absence from international action has further fueled speculation about his long-term future in the sport.

Brazil’s national team coach has also emphasized that only fully fit players will be considered for selection for the World Cup, which will take place from June 11 to July 19 in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. As uncertainty surrounds his fitness and availability, Neymar’s potential retirement remains a major topic of discussion in football circles worldwide.
