Government Action Leads to Big Fall in Sugar Prices

Wholesale sugar prices have dropped significantly across Pakistan following strict government action against hoarding, speculation, and artificial price hikes. The decline is providing relief to both markets and consumers.

Major trading hubs, particularly Karachi and Punjab, have experienced the most noticeable drops. In Karachi, wholesale sugar prices fell from Rs200 per kilogram to Rs150 per kilogram. Market sources reported a further decline to Rs146 per kilogram due to improved supply and tighter government regulation. Punjab witnessed a similar trend, with prices falling to Rs145 per kilogram.

Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, Chairperson of the Wholesale Grocers Association, said government interventions were key in stabilizing the market. He added that enforcement against profiteering and hoarding helped curb artificial price increases.

Forward sugar deals are currently being booked at Rs135 per kilogram, suggesting further reductions in the coming weeks. Ibrahim said ongoing monitoring and the active sugarcane crushing season could push prices even lower, possibly to Rs100 per kilogram.

Traders noted that sufficient sugar stocks across the country have eased pressure on prices. Approximately 150,000 tonnes of imported sugar are also available in warehouses, helping maintain an uninterrupted supply.

Market participants emphasized that sustained government oversight, strict action against hoarders, and steady crushing operations are vital for long-term price stability.

Consumers have welcomed the decline, expressing hope that lower wholesale sugar prices will soon reflect at retail stores. Analysts say that continued government monitoring and effective regulation are crucial to keeping prices affordable for the public.
