When Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction: How Amjad Sabri Won the Hearts of Armed Robbers

The late Qawwali maestro Amjad Sabri not only amassed a dedicated fanbase during his illustrious career but even won the hearts of a gang of armed robbers.

In a recent appearance on Nadir Ali’s podcast, Amjad’s son Mujadid shared a remarkable story from his father’s life. He recounted an incident when Amjad was performing in Jhansi, and his performance extended much longer than planned due to his commitment to not disappoint his fans. This caused him to leave much later than expected, despite having a flight to catch from Delhi to Karachi the next morning.

Locals had warned Amjad against venturing out at that hour due to the area’s notorious reputation for armed robbers. Nonetheless, Amjad and his crew decided to proceed and stopped at a dhaba for some tea.

Interestingly, the dhaba was playing a qawwali by Amjad’s father, Ghulam Farid. Recognizing Amjad, the dhaba owner and the customers, who turned out to be the very armed robbers they had been warned about, warmly welcomed him.

“They had their guns strapped on and everything!” Mujadid recalled. Upon realizing Amjad’s presence, the robbers approached him and, concerned for his safety, offered to escort him and his team for the remainder of their journey. They ensured his safe passage, demonstrating how Amjad’s charisma and musical genius could win over anyone.
