Apple Intelligence Unveiled at WWDC 2024
In June 2024, Apple made waves at WWDC with the unveiling of Apple Intelligence, quelling rumors that it had fallen behind competitors like Google and OpenAI in the generative AI arena. In true Apple fashion, the new platform takes a streamlined, integration-first approach, enhancing existing products rather than introducing a standalone feature. Although Apple Intelligence adds a bit of flair, the focus remains pragmatic and practical.
What is Apple Intelligence?
Apple Intelligence, a set of large language model (LLM)-driven tools, embeds AI functionality within Apple’s current apps, bringing new features to familiar platforms like Messages, Mail, and Pages. Users can expect updates in tasks like text summaries, message drafting, and advanced proofreading. At its September iPhone 16 event, Apple highlighted AI-powered additions, from Apple Watch translations to Siri’s enhanced abilities. The first phase of Apple Intelligence will arrive in October 2024 with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, followed by a second rollout with iOS 18.2 and related betas.

Localized Language Support
Initially launching in U.S. English, Apple Intelligence has since expanded to include Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, South African, and U.K. English, with additional languages, including Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish, scheduled for release in 2025. Notably, regulatory restrictions may limit access in regions like China and the EU.
Key Features: Writing, Visuals, and Siri’s Evolution
Apple Intelligence introduces Writing Tools across Apple’s ecosystem, supporting functions like proofreading, message drafting, and content summarization. It also includes Image Playground, an AI-based image generator that allows users to create custom emojis and visuals. Siri now has contextual awareness, allowing seamless interactions across apps, like photo editing directly within Messages.
Hardware Compatibility
Apple Intelligence’s initial phase will be available on devices such as:
- All iPhone 16 models
- iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max (A17 Pro)
- iPad Pro (M1 and later)
- MacBook Air and Pro (M1 and later)
Only Pro versions of iPhone 15 are eligible due to chipset limitations, but the full iPhone 16 lineup is expected to support it.
Privacy and On-Device AI Processing
Apple’s Private Cloud Compute offers enhanced security, using on-device resources where possible to minimize cloud dependency. For more complex requests, Apple utilizes its cloud servers powered by Apple Silicon, ensuring that off-device processing remains privacy-focused and transparent to the user.
Third-Party Integration: ChatGPT and More
In a move to broaden capabilities, Apple has integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence. With ChatGPT in iOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.2, Siri gains access to external knowledge, and users can leverage ChatGPT’s writing features. Apple plans to partner with additional generative AI platforms, with Google’s Gemini as a likely future collaborator.
Apple Intelligence, a free addition for compatible Apple devices, signals Apple’s entry into generative AI with a deliberate focus on privacy, integration, and practicality.
