New WhatsApp Feature Lets You Talk to People Without App

WhatsApp is developing a new feature called guest chats, allowing users to message people who do not have a WhatsApp account. The feature was first spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.22.13 and is under development for both Android and iOS.

How Guest Chats Work

Users can create a guest chat invite link from the “Invite a Friend” section or at the bottom of the contacts list. The link can be shared via SMS, email, or other messaging apps. Recipients can open the link on mobile or desktop and choose to download WhatsApp or continue as a guest using WhatsApp Web.

Guest chats use end-to-end encryption. When a guest joins, a unique encryption key is generated, ensuring only participants can read messages. WhatsApp cannot access the content. Users can verify encryption through a QR code or security code. Guests must agree to WhatsApp’s Terms of Service and can see the inviter’s phone number.

Guests are required to enter a name when joining. While nicknames are allowed, a recognizable name is recommended. Guests are not verified by WhatsApp, so users should confirm participant identity before sharing sensitive information.

Interface and Limitations

Guest participants are labeled as “Guest” in the chat interface. Only invited guests can start conversations. Guest chats come with limited features and do not support:

  • Group chats
  • Media sharing, such as photos, videos, or documents
  • Stickers, GIFs, or voice messages
  • Voice and video calls

Chats expire after 10 days of inactivity. Users must create a new invite link to continue the conversation. Guests may not receive notifications, requiring manual checking. Users can block guests the same way as regular contacts.

Availability

WhatsApp is currently testing guest chats with a small number of beta users. The company has not announced a wider release date.

This feature allows communication with non-users without requiring them to download WhatsApp. However, users should exercise caution when sharing sensitive information with guests.
