WhatsApp Tests New Feature to Show Which Contacts Are Online

WhatsApp is testing a new feature that could change how users interact on the app. The upcoming update will allow users to see which of their contacts are currently online without opening individual chats.

According to reports from WABetaInfo, the feature is being tested in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android devices. This means only selected users currently have access to it during the testing phase.

At present, users must open a chat to check if someone is online. The “online” status appears at the top of the conversation screen. In group chats, a small green indicator may show if a participant is active. However, this process takes time and requires manual checking for each contact.

The new WhatsApp feature aims to simplify this experience. It will provide a quick overview of how many contacts are online at a given moment. This approach is similar to features seen in other messaging platforms. Reports suggest it may resemble the “Active” tab found in Facebook Messenger.

With this update, users will not need to open multiple chats. Instead, they can instantly view active contacts from a central section. This could improve communication by helping users connect at the right time.

However, the feature is still under development. There is no confirmed date for its public release. It is also unclear whether additional privacy controls will be included. Privacy concerns may arise if users do not want their online status to be widely visible.

Despite this, the update reflects ongoing efforts by WhatsApp to improve user experience. The platform continues to introduce features that make communication faster and more convenient. Testing in beta versions allows developers to gather feedback before a full rollout.

If successfully launched, this feature could become a useful addition for millions of users worldwide. It may help people manage conversations more efficiently and stay connected in real time.

For now, users will need to wait until the testing phase is complete. Further updates are expected as WhatsApp continues to refine the feature.
