Restoration of Margalla Hills Hilltop: A New Era of Public Access and Conservation

Before the construction of large restaurants on the ridge of Pir Sohawa Road within Margalla Hills National Park (MHNP), the breezy hilltop was a cherished spot for public enjoyment. The Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) is now working to restore this area to its former state of free public access.

Restoration Plans and Actions:

  • Dismantling of Buildings: Starting September 12, the IWMB will initiate the removal of the restaurants, following directives from the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The process includes dismantling the structures and clearing debris, with the Capital Development Authority (CDA) providing machinery and labor.
  • Implementation Committee: A committee has been formed, including representatives from the District Administration, Islamabad Police, Capital Development Authority, Ministry of Climate Change, and restoration experts. This team is tasked with overseeing the project and ensuring adherence to the restoration plan.

Hilltop Restoration Model:

The committee has approved a comprehensive restoration plan aimed at converting the hilltop into an open-air space that promotes both public engagement and wildlife conservation. Key features of the plan include:

  • Visitor Amenities: Comfortable benches will be installed to offer visitors a place to relax and take in the scenic views.
  • Flora and Fauna: Local flora will be planted to support biodiversity and provide a natural habitat for wildlife. Educational displays featuring indigenous species will be set up to enhance public awareness of local biodiversity.
  • Sustainable Practices: A water harvesting system and reservoir will be introduced to support sustainable water management. The retaining walls of the terraces will be preserved, but the concrete will be removed to facilitate plantation.
  • Emergency Response Facility: A small facility will be established for quick response and first aid, focusing on firefighting emergencies.
  • Lighting Management: A lighting management policy will ensure that solar lights are switched off at sunset to reduce wildlife disturbance.

The IWMB’s initiative aims to enhance public enjoyment of the Margalla Viewpoint while fostering a deeper connection with nature and supporting local wildlife conservation efforts.
