Wasim Akram Reveals Why He Isn’t Interested in Coaching Pakistan

Former Pakistan fast bowler and national team captain Wasim Akram has made it clear that he is not interested in taking up a coaching or chief selector role for Pakistan cricket. Speaking on a local sports program, Akram responded to a fan’s inquiry about his lack of interest in coaching by citing the disrespect and criticism that former players, like Waqar Younis, have faced when transitioning into such roles.

Akram stated, “When I see how former players in coaching roles are treated, I know I wouldn’t be able to handle that kind of backlash,” adding that Waqar Younis, who has coached on multiple occasions, endured significant criticism that has dissuaded him from pursuing a similar path.

While he has ruled out an official coaching position, Akram emphasized his willingness to support Pakistan cricket whenever needed, without expecting any financial compensation. “I don’t need money to help Pakistan cricket. If I’m invited to a camp or a tournament, I’ll be there to assist the players. But I don’t want to put myself in a situation where I have to face unwarranted criticism,” he said.

The 58-year-old also mentioned that his family commitments play a significant role in his decision. “I have a 10-year-old daughter and two boys, and I want to spend time with them. Still, whenever the national team is preparing for a tournament and sets up a training camp, I’m happy to help out,” Akram added.

Historically, Pakistan has appointed former cricketers such as Javed Miandad, Misbah-ul-Haq, and Waqar Younis as head coaches, but most have eventually faced intense public and media scrutiny, rendering the position thankless in Akram’s eyes. Aaqib Javed, another former Pakistan player, is currently experiencing similar challenges after failing to coach the team into the Champions Trophy semi-finals.

With the national team now entering a rebuilding phase, Pakistan’s cricket authorities might need to consider alternatives beyond former stars like Akram for leadership roles.
