Warning WhatsApp to Cease Functioning on Certain Devices in 2025

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has announced that it will stop supporting older Android and iPhone devices starting January 1, 2025.

This move is in response to technological advancements aimed at improving the security, functionality, and overall user experience of the app.

According to a report by IOL, Android devices running the KitKat operating system or older will no longer support WhatsApp. This includes several popular models from brands like Samsung, Motorola, HTC, LG, and Sony.

The decision is part of WhatsApp’s strategy to incorporate newer technologies such as end-to-end encryption, multi-device support, advanced video calling, and AI-driven features, which older devices cannot fully support.

Older devices often struggle to accommodate new features and face growing challenges in securing user data. Without regular software updates, these devices become more vulnerable to cyber threats, compromising both privacy and app performance.

Devices affected by the change:

Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

Additionally, iPhone users with devices running iOS 15.1 or older will need to update by May 5, 2025. This means iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus users must either upgrade their devices or update to a newer iOS version to continue using WhatsApp.

The shift towards requiring more modern hardware is part of Meta’s effort to ensure WhatsApp stays secure, efficient, and adaptable to new technological trends. As concerns around privacy and cybersecurity increase, the company is working to meet the demands of the digital age. Older devices’ inability to support these advancements makes them more susceptible to security risks, and without updates, their app performance deteriorates.

WhatsApp’s decision to phase out support for these older devices reflects the ongoing trend of optimizing apps and services for more advanced software and hardware. With the rise of sophisticated security threats, using modern devices that can handle these complexities is increasingly important.

What users should do:

Affected users are encouraged to either upgrade their devices or ensure their phones are running the latest available software. Android users must update to at least Android 4.0.3 (KitKat), while iPhone users will need to update to iOS 16 or later to continue using WhatsApp.
