WAPDA Reveals Plan To Expand Hydropower in Pakistan

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]The Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA) is actively engaged in enhancing water capacity and hydropower generation through eight ongoing projects.

These initiatives aim to increase the carryover water capacity from 30 to 45 days and add 9.7 million acre-feet of water storage, contributing substantially to the nation’s water resilience. Concurrently, hydel power generation is set to double, reaching 18,000 MW, reflecting an impressive surge of 9,043 MW.

This significant update was shared with a delegation from PAF Air War College Karachi during their visit to Wapda House. Secretary Wapda, Fakharuzzaman Ali Cheema, extended a warm welcome to the guests, and Advisor (Hydrology and Water Management) Shahid Hamid provided a detailed overview of Wapda’s crucial role, functions, and developmental plans.

The discussion also delved into the challenges and opportunities posed by climate change and water security in Pakistan.

The delegation learned that Wapda is currently undertaking an extensive portfolio of development projects in the water and hydropower sectors, scheduled for completion between 2024 and 2029. These projects aim to address Pakistan’s water, food, and energy security concerns.

Noteworthy projects in the pipeline include Diamer Basha Dam, Mohmand Dam, Dasu (Stage-I), Kurram Tangi Dam (Stage-I), Nai Gaj Dam, Kachhi Canal Extension, Tarbela 5th Extension Project, and Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme (K-IV).

Currently storing only 10 percent of its annual river flows, well below the global average of 40 percent, Pakistan anticipates a substantial improvement in both water storage and hydropower capacity upon the completion of these under-construction projects.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
