KARACHI: The ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in Sindh declared Murtaza Wahab, the province government’s spokeswoman, as the party’s nominee for the top position on Monday. Wahab is an unelected contender for the position of Karachi mayor.

On June 15, elections will be held for the position of mayor of Karachi, with the PPP now holding 155 seats in the 367-member assembly, including the reserved ones.

No party now holds a simple majority of 179 votes in the house, the number required to decide who will take the coveted position of mayor of the port city. According to the most recent figures, there are 175 PPP, PML-N, and JUI-F members altogether. Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), on the other hand, came in second place with a total of 130 seats, including the reserved seats, and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), with a total of 63 seats.

There are currently 193 members of the two parties’ alliance. The alliance appears to have the necessary support to take the desired seat, but the PPP has been insisting that a “jiyala” will run the city this time.

No one is under duress, but, according to Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, their option to vote in accordance with their “conscience” will be respected. The PPP presented a list of candidates for mayor and deputy roles as well as chairman and vice-chairman positions in 13 of the mega city’s towns.

According to information, Salman Abdullah Murad has been chosen by the province’s ruling party to fill the position of deputy mayor of Karachi. Meanwhile, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari congratulated everyone of his party’s nominees, stating that the public has shown confidence in his organisation.

He posted the following message on Twitter: “Now let’s go win the next round and get started with what we do best, serving the people.” The PPP leader expressed gratitude to the citizens of Hyderabad and Karachi for “first-time trusting us.” He continued, “I have complete confidence that Mr. Shoro and Mr. Wahab will be the first but not the last PPP mayors of our two fantastic cities.

In response to his tweet, Wahab stated he was speechless by the party leadership’s decision to nominate him for the coveted position. The PPP’s mayoral candidate also thanked his party members “who worked so hard to win us the city elections” in a series of tweets.

Under the leadership of the party chairman, he promised that they would collaborate and perform well. “I am a Karachiite; the city runs through my veins, and there is no greater honour for me than to work for the advancement of our wonderful city.”

Wahab vowed to carry out his obligations to the best of his ability and move the city ahead while collaborating with all political and administrative parties. In the meantime, Kashif Shoro, the party’s choice for the position of Hyderabad mayor, expressed his gratitude to the PPP chairman for giving him the job. The PPP candidate swore, “I will do my best to live up to the obligations and expectations of the people of my city and serve with zeal and zest.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
