Wagah Border Parade Restarts as Tensions Continue

India’s Border Security Force (BSF) has resumed the iconic beating retreat parade at the Wagah-Attari border after a 12-day suspension caused by recent escalations between India and Pakistan. The parade, paused since May 7 by Indian authorities, returned on Monday with full ceremonial fanfare.

During the suspension, Pakistan’s Punjab Rangers continued their daily performance uninterrupted, drawing crowds on their side of the border. The return of the BSF to the parade marks a symbolic step toward normalcy, though the mood remains cautious.

Despite the synchronized parade on both sides, the border gates remained shut throughout the ceremony. Notably, the customary handshake between Indian and Pakistani border personnel was absent—signaling that, while public displays continue, official relations remain tense.

Officials have not issued formal statements on the future of the border ceremony or whether a full restoration of tradition, including handshakes, is expected anytime soon.

The development comes amid ongoing efforts to de-escalate recent military and diplomatic strains between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
