Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyökeres has reportedly turned down a potential transfer to Manchester United, despite speculation linking him with a reunion with former manager Rúben Amorim at Old Trafford.

According to Portuguese outlet Record, the Swedish striker’s agent, Hasan Çetinkaya, informed United that the 27-year-old has no interest in joining the Red Devils, even if Amorim takes over as manager. Gyökeres enjoyed a sensational debut season in Portugal, netting 54 goals in 52 appearances across all competitions, attracting interest from several elite European clubs.

United, seeking to strengthen their attack after an inconsistent campaign, had hoped Amorim’s potential appointment would give them an edge in securing Gyökeres. Instead, the striker appears determined to pursue other options, with Arsenal now emerging as a strong contender for his signature.

The Gunners, offering Champions League football and a more stable project under Mikel Arteta, could provide an appealing alternative as they look to bolster their frontline for another title push. While no official bids have been lodged, Arsenal’s interest may grow following Gyökeres’ rejection of United.

For Erik ten Hag’s side, this setback adds to what is already a crucial summer rebuild. With Rasmus Højlund still developing and no established world-class striker secured, United’s need for a proven goalscorer remains urgent. The rejection also underscores growing concerns about the club’s ability to attract top talent amid ongoing instability in leadership, recruitment, and managerial direction.

Once considered a dream destination for players, United’s recent struggles and lack of clarity appear to be costing them in the transfer market, with elite players now favoring more stable and ambitious projects elsewhere.
