US Urges Peaceful Protests and Calls on Government to Uphold Human Rights

US Calls for Restraint Amid Escalating Political Tensions in Pakistan

The United States has urged all parties in Pakistan to exercise restraint and uphold fundamental freedoms as political unrest intensifies.

During a press briefing, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the importance of peaceful protests and respect for human rights. “We support freedom of expression around the world, including in Pakistan,” Miller stated. “We call on protesters to demonstrate peacefully and refrain from violence.”

The US also urged the Pakistani government to ensure human rights are respected during this crisis. “We call on the Pakistani government to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms,” Miller added, stressing the need to maintain law and order in line with Pakistan’s legal framework.

Violence and Casualties Amid Protests

The comments come as clashes between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protesters and security personnel continue to escalate. On Sunday, tensions flared at Chungi No 26 in Islamabad, leaving a Rangers officer injured.

In a separate incident, Police Constable Mubashir, 46, succumbed to head injuries sustained during violent clashes at Hakla Interchange. Meanwhile, more than 100 police personnel have been injured across multiple areas as protests turned violent.

The unrest has further intensified in Attock, where three police officers were critically injured near Katti Pahari. Constable Wajid from Faisalabad sustained a bullet wound to the neck and remains in critical condition, while Constable Samiullah from Sargodha was shot in the leg. Another officer, also named Samiullah, was injured in stone-pelting and is receiving treatment in Hasanabdal.

At least 23 additional officers were injured in a violent confrontation with PTI workers on the Ghazi Barotha Bridge, according to police reports.

Authorities Respond

In response to the escalating violence, authorities are using CCTV footage to identify and apprehend individuals involved in the attacks. Injured law enforcement personnel have been admitted to various hospitals, where medical teams are working to stabilize their conditions.

The US’s call for restraint comes at a critical juncture, urging both protesters and authorities in Pakistan to prioritize peaceful resolution and adherence to democratic principles amidst the ongoing turmoil.
