US to Shut Peshawar Consulate—Services Move to Islamabad

The US has announced it will permanently close its consulate in Peshawar, a mission near the Afghan border.

The US State Department told Congress that the move will save $7.5 million annually while maintaining full diplomatic and consular operations in Pakistan.

All consular functions and diplomatic work will now be handled through the US Embassy in Islamabad, about 114 miles from Peshawar. Officials said the closure will not affect US national interests.

Strategic Importance of Peshawar Consulate

The Peshawar consulate has been the closest US post to Afghanistan and served as a key hub for operations and overland travel into the country. It played an important role before, during, and after the 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan.

Even after closure, the US will continue assistance to American citizens and oversight of foreign aid programs through existing missions in Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore.

Costs and Staff

The closure will save roughly $7.5 million per year, but the department will spend about $3 million to shut down the facility.

Expenses include relocating armored trailers, vehicles, telecommunications equipment, and office furniture to the US Embassy in Islamabad and other consulates.

The Peshawar consulate currently employs 18 American diplomats and 89 local staff members.

Part of Broader State Department Cuts

Officials said the decision is part of a larger restructuring effort by the US State Department, aimed at reducing costs and improving efficiency.

The closure is not related to regional conflicts, despite recent protests in Karachi and Peshawar that temporarily suspended consulate operations.

The Peshawar consulate will be the first US diplomatic mission abroad permanently closed under this reorganization.

Officials emphasized that all core diplomatic and consular functions will continue, ensuring uninterrupted services for US citizens in Pakistan.
