Cyprus Strengthens Ties with the U.S. Through Access to Military Equipment
Cyprus has reached a significant milestone in its relations with the United States, as President Joe Biden authorized the island nation to access American military equipment, marking a notable shift in its geopolitical alignment.
A Shift Toward Pro-American Policies
Historically aligned with Russia, Cyprus adopted a pro-American stance following the election of President Nikos Christodoulides in 2023. In a memorandum issued by the White House, Biden emphasized that providing Cyprus with defense articles and services would enhance U.S. security and contribute to global peace.
The United States Embassy in Nicosia confirmed Cyprus’s eligibility for military supplies under programs like Foreign Military Sales and the Excess Defense Articles initiative.
Historic Development in Bilateral Relations
The Cyprus Presidency hailed the decision as a “historic milestone,” recognizing Cyprus as a “key pillar of stability and security in the Eastern Mediterranean.” The move is expected to bolster diplomacy and defense cooperation, solidifying the country’s strategic importance in the region.
On social media, U.S. Ambassador Julie Davis Fisher highlighted the significance of Biden’s decision, calling it an essential step toward deepening the partnership and enhancing security in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Background and Strategic Importance
The U.S. had already lifted a decades-old arms embargo on Cyprus in 2022, contingent on the country denying Russian warships access to its ports. The embargo, imposed in 1987, was aimed at fostering reunification of the island, which remains divided since Turkey’s invasion of the north in 1974.
Cypriot government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis underscored Cyprus’s reliability as a partner, citing its strategic contributions during the Middle East crisis, including aid delivery to Gaza and the evacuation of U.S. nationals.
Strengthening Diplomatic Ties
In 2023, President Christodoulides became the first Cypriot leader to visit the White House since 1996, initiating a Strategic Dialogue aimed at expanding cooperation in security and other areas.
This enhanced defense collaboration signifies a profound shift in Cyprus’s geopolitical orientation and underscores its growing role as a stabilizing force in the Eastern Mediterranean.
