At least 20 newborns have died in recent days at DHQ Hospital Pakpattan, triggering widespread concern and official action across Punjab. A preliminary report by the Health Department reveals that untrained nurses and unsafe deliveries at unregistered maternity homes played a key role in the tragedy.

According to the report, 15 out of the 20 infants were not born in the government hospital. Instead, they were delivered at illegal clinics or by untrained midwives, often without proper medical facilities. These newborns were brought to DHQ Hospital only after their conditions worsened beyond recovery.

The report confirms that five deaths were directly linked to the dangerous practices of untrained nurses. In many cases, the mothers were absent during the infants’ admission, making emergency care and documentation difficult.

Contrary to earlier claims, there was no oxygen shortage at the hospital. Officials confirmed that 45 oxygen cylinders were available and fully functional during the crisis.

In response, local authorities have sealed several illegal maternity homes and closed the operation theaters of four unregistered private hospitals. These facilities lacked basic licensing and trained staff, according to Deputy Director Health Dr. Ahmad Salman and Deputy Commissioner Maria Tariq.

A high-level inquiry committee has been formed, including medical experts and a biomedical engineer. They are expected to submit a detailed report within five days. The Punjab Health Department has also pledged urgent reforms based on the findings.

Although internal audits cleared pediatric staff of direct negligence, concerns remain over poor documentation and delayed response times. Families of the deceased and civil society groups are demanding an independent investigation and full transparency.

The case has sparked calls for stricter regulation, better training, and improved neonatal care across Punjab.

The Punjab government has ended the free Health Card treatment in public hospitals starting July 1. For full details, read Punjab Ends Free Health Card Treatment in Public Hospitals from July 1. This move impacts thousands of patients relying on government healthcare.
