UNGA approves Pakistan's resolution against Islamophobia

Pakistan’s global endeavors against Islamophobia have yielded positive results, with the United Nations passing a resolution aimed at combating prejudice and hatred towards Muslims.

As a vocal advocate for addressing Islamophobia on the global stage, Islamabad consistently raises concerns about the escalating incidents and sentiments of Islamophobia, advocating for greater understanding and tolerance.

Most recently, the international community endorsed a resolution presented by Pakistan to combat Islamophobia on the International Day to Combat Islamophobia. The resolution, introduced by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, received overwhelming support with 115 votes in favor.

This resolution signifies a collective commitment to addressing Islamophobia worldwide, garnering support from member states and emphasizing the urgent need to combat discrimination and violence targeting Muslims. It specifically calls for action to halt violence against Muslims within the context of Islamophobia.

A key aspect of the resolution is the call for the UN secretary-general to appoint a special envoy to combat Islamophobia, recognizing it as a threat to international peace and security and stressing the necessity for coordinated efforts to counter it.

By addressing the root causes and manifestations of Islamophobia, the international community aims to promote mutual respect and harmony.

In observance of the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the importance of peace and order during the Holy Month of Ramadan in his address to the General Assembly. He underscored the need for unity against intolerance and bigotry, highlighting the role of social media platforms in propagating hate speech and calling for an end to religious-based harassment.
