UN, Russia, and Iran Urge Dialogue as Pak-Afghan Tensions Escalate

The international community has called on Pakistan and Afghanistan to resolve their disputes through dialogue as military tensions escalate.

UN Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett urged calm and stressed respect for international human rights and humanitarian law, particularly the protection of civilians. In a social media post, he emphasized that the violence linked to rising tensions must stop immediately and called for urgent de-escalation between the two countries.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry also encouraged both sides to settle their differences through diplomatic channels and to halt cross-border attacks. Iran expressed readiness to facilitate dialogue and strengthen cooperation, with its foreign minister stating that Tehran stands prepared to support efforts that promote understanding between the neighboring states.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that Pakistan’s armed forces have carried out airstrikes targeting key Afghan Taliban military installations in Kabul, Kandahar, and Paktia. Authorities claim that over 130 militants have been killed so far. State media further reported that multiple brigade and corps headquarters, along with ammunition depots and logistics bases, were destroyed or targeted during the operations.

Tensions intensified after alleged unprovoked firing from Afghan Taliban positions at several border locations, prompting Pakistan to launch retaliatory strikes under the ongoing Operation Ghazab lil-Haq. Officials state that the operation has resulted in significant militant casualties and injuries.

As the situation remains volatile, international actors continue urging restraint and diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation and restore stability along the border.
