The United Nations has strongly condemned Israel’s recent moves targeting the agency responsible for assisting Palestinian refugees, warning of severe humanitarian consequences. UN officials said the actions threaten the continued functioning of the agency at a time when millions of refugees depend on its services for survival, protection, and basic dignity.
According to the UN, the agency plays a critical role in providing education, healthcare, food assistance, and emergency relief across Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Any restrictions, funding cuts, or operational bans could disrupt lifesaving aid and worsen an already dire humanitarian situation, especially in conflict-affected areas.
UN representatives stressed that international humanitarian law requires all parties to allow impartial aid organisations to operate freely. They warned that undermining the refugee agency could set a dangerous precedent, weakening the global humanitarian system and reducing protection for vulnerable civilian populations during times of crisis.
The condemnation comes amid heightened regional tensions and an escalating humanitarian emergency in Gaza. UN officials noted that the refugee agency has been one of the few institutions capable of delivering large-scale assistance under extremely difficult conditions, often at great risk to its staff and facilities.
The United Nations also rejected allegations used to justify actions against the agency, saying concerns should be addressed through transparent investigations rather than collective punishment. It urged Israel to cooperate with the UN, engage constructively, and avoid measures that could further destabilise the region.
The UN reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Palestinian refugees and called on the international community to defend humanitarian principles. It appealed to member states to ensure continued funding and political backing, warning that the collapse of the agency would have long-term consequences for regional stability and prospects for peace.
