UN Chief Calls for Restraint as Iran-Israel Conflict Intensifies

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a strong appeal for calm, urging both Iran and Israel to step back from the brink of a broader conflict following a sharp escalation in hostilities between the two countries. His call came after a week of intense missile exchanges and rising global concern over potential fallout.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Guterres expressed deep alarm over Israel’s reported strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and Iran’s subsequent missile retaliation on Tel Aviv. “The time has come to stop everything,” he wrote. “There should be no more tension after Tehran’s missile attacks on Tel Aviv. Peace and diplomacy must prevail.”

The secretary-general’s remarks reflect a growing international consensus that further military actions could spiral out of control. Iran’s missile barrage, described as a response to Israeli aggression, marked one of the most serious confrontations between the regional rivals in recent memory.

Guterres appealed to both nations to prioritize dialogue over military action, warning that continued escalation would have “devastating consequences not only for the region but for global peace and security.”

His message follows similar calls from global leaders urging restraint and a return to diplomacy, as fears grow that the Iran-Israel conflict could ignite a broader war across the Middle East.
