UK Voters Choose DDLJ Song as Top 90s Bollywood Hit

As the BBC Asian Network ran a poll for listeners to determine the UK’s favorite Bollywood ’90s track, it became clear that there was one standout winner: “Tujhe Dekha To” from the 1995 Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol blockbuster “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” (DDLJ).

A panel of the station’s presenters, including Haroon Rashid, Nikita Kanda, Gagan Grewal, and Nadia Ali, along with industry experts Asim Burney, Amrita Tanna, and Karan Pangali, curated a shortlist of 50 songs. This list featured hits such as the dance number “Ole Ole” from “Yeh Dillagi” and the ballad “Bahon Ke Darmiyan” from “Khamoshi: The Musical.” However, “Tujhe Dekha To” emerged as the unanimous favorite, underscoring its status as a cultural phenomenon.

Directed by film mogul Aditya Chopra and starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, who both became major stars in the ’90s Bollywood scene, it’s no surprise that this track would resonate deeply with audiences. The song, featuring the leads dancing in a vibrant field of mustard plants, has become a symbol of classic ’90s Indian pop culture.

Composed by the musical duo Jatin-Lalit and sung by the legendary Lata Mangeshkar, who passed away in 2022, and Kumar Sanu, “Tujhe Dekha To” continues to be one of the most-played songs on music streaming platforms, highlighting the enduring power of nostalgia.

DDLJ, known simply as DDLJ to its fans, tells the story of Raj and Simran, who meet and fall in love during a European vacation, against the wishes of Simran’s father. Although it was released nearly thirty years ago in 1995, DDLJ still runs in Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir theatre, testament to its lasting impact.
