UK To Discourage Legal Migration Through Salary Reforms

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]The UK government plans to deter legal migration by raising the minimum salary for foreign workers. An expected update may increase the minimum salary requirement for skilled worker visas, currently set at £26,200.

Home Secretary James Cleverly is anticipated to announce these measures in the House of Commons soon. As part of anti-migration reforms, constraints on healthcare worker visas and limitations on the number of dependents migrants can bring to the UK are also likely to be implemented. The move follows pressure to address the surge in legal migration, with 745,000 net migrations recorded last year.

The exact minimum salary remains unconfirmed, but reports suggest it might rise to over £35,000 or even £38,000. There are also indications of potential changes to the list of occupations allowing foreign workers to be hired below standard salary thresholds, with recommendations to eliminate the 20% rule for certain roles on the shortage occupation list.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has pledged to reduce migration levels, acknowledging concerns about high migration, while the government faces pressure regarding migrants from countries such as Afghanistan, Ukraine, and Rwanda.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
