The UK is expected to experience its warmest day of 2025 on Thursday as the spring equinox ushers in higher-than-average temperatures. According to the Met Office, parts of the country could see temperatures reaching up to 21°C, particularly in central and southern regions, with widespread sunshine predicted throughout the day.
On Wednesday, the highest temperature recorded was 18.7°C in Northolt, west London, but Thursday is expected to be even warmer. Met Office meteorologist Simon Partridge said: “We’re likely to see 19°C or 20°C widely, with one or two areas possibly reaching 21°C, especially in areas stretching from London to the southern Midlands.”

These conditions are set to make parts of the UK warmer than some European cities, with Barcelona forecast to reach just 15°C and Athens only 12°C. While it’s unlikely that 2025 will break the spring equinox record of 21.5°C, set in 1972, the forecast suggests a notable warm spell for this time of year.
However, the warm weather won’t last long, with showers expected to arrive by Friday, affecting Wales, Cornwall, and parts of central and southern England. The weekend looks set to bring more unsettled weather, with rain forecast for much of the country.
While these warm temperatures are 4°C to 7°C above the March average, climate experts note that such spells are becoming more frequent due to climate change. Scientists suggest this week’s warmth is up to five times more likely due to global warming.
