In recent weeks, Britain has updated its travel advice for citizens visiting the United States, warning that individuals who fail to comply with U.S. entry rules could face arrest or detention. This revision follows a series of immigration-related executive orders issued by U.S. President Donald Trump, focusing on stricter border policies and visa vetting procedures.
The new British guidance, published by the Foreign Office, emphasizes the importance of complying with all entry and visa conditions, noting that U.S. authorities enforce these rules rigorously. The advisory now states: “You may be liable to arrest or detention if you break the rules,” a notable update from its previous, less explicit warning about U.S. entry regulations.

Germany has also updated its travel advisory for the U.S., highlighting that possession of a visa or entry waiver does not guarantee entry, after several German nationals were detained at U.S. borders recently. These changes come amid increasing concerns about the enforcement of immigration laws under the new U.S. administration.
The British Foreign Office declined to comment on the specific reasons behind the revision or when it was made but confirmed that its travel advice is continuously reviewed to help citizens make informed decisions. Earlier this month, a British national was reportedly detained for over 10 days at the U.S. border due to a possible breach of visa conditions, drawing attention to the heightened scrutiny travelers are facing.
The woman has since returned to Britain, and the Foreign Office has confirmed it provided assistance during her detention.
