UK Deputy PM Rayner Resigns Following Tax Mistake Revelation

The UK Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner, resigned on Friday after admitting she underpaid property tax on her new home. The resignation is a significant setback for Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Rayner, 45, is the eighth minister to leave Starmer’s team. She was also the most senior official to depart amid ongoing challenges for the UK government. Starmer had previously offered her full support when initial concerns about her tax payments emerged.

In her resignation letter, Rayner took full responsibility, saying she regretted not seeking specialist tax advice. She also confirmed she would correct the tax error. Starmer responded by saying he was saddened by her departure but believed she made the right decision.

The resignation comes at a difficult time for Starmer. Labour is trailing behind Reform UK in recent polls, and losing a deputy with Rayner’s influence may affect party unity. Rayner was known for bridging the gap between Labour’s left and centrist wings, and her departure leaves a significant gap in leadership.

Rayner had referred herself to the independent adviser on ministerial standards after realizing she made a mistake. She had sold her share of her family home in northern England to buy a property in Hove. She believed this would exempt her from paying the higher tax rate on a second home. Following further advice, she acknowledged her error and agreed to pay the additional tax.

Since Starmer became Prime Minister, eight ministers have left, with five resignations linked to wrongdoing. This makes it the highest number of early departures in a UK government outside normal reshuffles since 1979.

The resignation comes as Starmer prepares for a challenging second half of the year, including presenting a new budget. Analysts expect possible tax rises, and political pressure continues from opposition leaders such as Nigel Farage.

Rayner’s exit marks a key moment for the UK government. Her departure may influence party dynamics and public perception in the coming months.
