The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has launched a new Department of Medical Journalism. This initiative aims to improve the quality of medical publications and train future editors.
The launch event was held at the UHS City Campus. Editors, academics, and faculty members from across Punjab attended. Discussions focused on raising publishing standards and building strong editorial networks.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, major healthcare reforms are underway. These include the construction of new hospitals throughout Punjab.
Professor Nadia Naseem, UHS Pro-Vice Chancellor and Editor-in-Chief of BioMedica, highlighted UHS’s growing role in medical journalism. She said that 225 editors have been trained through university programs. Additionally, 30 medical colleges in Punjab currently publish academic journals.
UHS has established a dedicated Journal Office. This office trains both students and faculty in editorial practices. Professor Naseem stated, “The consortium offers a platform to improve research quality and editor development.”
UHS Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ahsan Waheed Rathore emphasized the importance of the new department. He traced UHS’s journey from certificate courses in 2019 to a WHO-accredited postgraduate diploma in 2024. He called the department a major step for academic leadership in scientific publishing.
Other experts also praised the UHS initiative. Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal from Fatima Jinnah Medical University said it will boost academic publishing in Pakistan. Prof. Dr. Javed Akram urged more focus on global visibility and research writing in education.
Veteran journalist Shaukat Ali Jawaid called for ongoing support to improve medical publishing nationwide.
The launch of this department marks a significant milestone for UHS in advancing medical journalism in the region.
