A rare lenticular cloud hovering over Quetta early Tuesday sparked curiosity among residents, many of whom turned to social media to guess its origin. The cloud was spotted around the time of morning prayers from various areas of Balochistan, triggering widespread speculation. Some online users even linked it to possible missile trials or advanced military technology.
Later in the day, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) dismissed the rumours, confirming it was a natural “lenticular cloud formation” above the Koh-e-Murdaar range before sunrise. The PMD noted that the cloud appeared before dawn, remained visible for nearly 20 minutes, and faded just before daybreak.
Lenticular clouds, as described by the UK’s Met Office, are lens-shaped formations that occur when stable air flows over mountains or hills, producing wave patterns in the atmosphere. These smooth, disc-like clouds often form downwind of mountain ranges and are commonly mistaken for UFOs worldwide.
