UAE Weighs Joining Trump Effort to Open Strait Hormuz

The United Arab Emirates has signaled that it may join a US-led initiative aimed at securing the Strait of Hormuz, following a call from US President Donald Trump.

The remarks were made by Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, during an online discussion hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations, a US-based think tank, according to media reports.

Gargash highlighted rising tensions in the Gulf and warned about increasing risks to maritime traffic, stating that the safety of the Strait of Hormuz has become a matter of global concern due to threats targeting shipping lanes. He noted that while no formal plan is currently in place, the UAE would consider participating if a multinational maritime mission led by the United States is established. He also clarified that there are no ongoing talks between the UAE and Iran at present.

He stressed the need for regional stability and emphasized that uninterrupted global trade must be ensured despite escalating tensions. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical waterways, serving as a major route for oil exports from Gulf nations to international markets.

Reports suggest that Iran has shut down the Strait of Hormuz in response to recent US and Israeli actions and has reportedly targeted foreign commercial vessels in the area.

Meanwhile, countries like Australia and Japan have declined to join any military operation in the Strait of Hormuz, citing concerns over the volatile situation. Australian and Japanese officials made it clear they do not intend to deploy naval forces.

US President Donald Trump has urged several nations to contribute warships, warning that countries relying on the route should help protect it. The UK is reviewing options, while China has called for de-escalation without confirming participation.
