UAE to Cease Free Electric Car Charging Starting in 2025

The government-owned electric vehicle (EV) charging network, UAEV, announced that its revised tariffs will take effect in January 2025. The new rates will charge Dh1.20 per kWh (plus VAT) for DC chargers and Dh0.70 per kWh (plus VAT) for AC chargers.

These updated tariffs mark a significant move toward improving the sustainability and scalability of the EV charging infrastructure. Since the introduction of tariffs in May, EV charging services have remained free.

To enhance the user experience, UAEV will launch a mobile app with features such as finding nearby charging stations, live status updates, and easy payment options. A 24/7 call center will also be available to provide instant support and assistance.

Sharif Al Olama, Chairman of UAEV, stated, “The introduction of standardized charging tariffs, along with innovative solutions like the UAEV app and round-the-clock support, underscores our commitment to improving the EV driver experience.” He also highlighted the goal of contributing to the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy, aiming for a cleaner, greener future.

Looking ahead, UAEV plans to expand its network with 1,000 chargers by 2030, strategically placed across urban centers, highways, and transit hubs throughout the UAE. This network will ensure convenient access for both inter-city and intra-city EV users across all emirates.
