A two-day manhunt in Utah ended with the arrest of 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University.
President Donald Trump revealed on Fox & Friends that Robinson was already in custody. He stated, “I think with a high degree of certainty, we have him,” noting that someone close to Robinson had turned him in. Trump praised Kirk as “brilliant” and “like a son” and urged the death penalty for Robinson.
Charlie Kirk, 31, was a prominent conservative media personality and a close Trump ally. He played a key role in mobilizing young Republican voters and supporting Trump’s election efforts. Kirk was shot in the neck on Wednesday while addressing a crowd of 3,000 people. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he died shortly afterward.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox detailed Robinson’s arrest during a Friday press conference. Authorities said a family member of Robinson confided in a friend, who then alerted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. Surveillance footage also showed Robinson arriving on campus in his Dodge Challenger on the morning of September 10. Relatives told investigators that Robinson had grown “more political” and expressed hostility toward Kirk in recent months.
Authorities released footage showing a man fleeing across a rooftop near the scene. Robinson was wearing Converse sneakers, jeans, a black long-sleeved T-shirt with a U.S. flag and eagle design, and a black baseball cap. Palm and shoe prints left at the scene are now being analyzed.
The federal manhunt involved more than 200 interviews and 11,000 public tips before Robinson was captured. While motives are not officially confirmed, early reports suggest his animosity toward Kirk’s politics may have played a role.
With Tyler Robinson in custody, investigators are expected to uncover further details about his motives, possible affiliations, and planning. The case raises concerns about political polarization and security at high-profile public events in the United States. Officials urge patience as the investigation continues.
