Two Pakistani Astronauts Chosen for China Space Mission

Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has successfully concluded the second stage of its astronaut selection process under the nation’s Human Spaceflight Program, according to an announcement by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Saturday.

Following an initial round of screening in Pakistan, two candidates were chosen to proceed after undergoing a series of rigorous medical, psychological, and aptitude evaluations at China’s Astronauts Centre (ACC). These assessments adhered to international standards for human spaceflight, ensuring the selected individuals meet the stringent requirements for astronaut missions.

The two shortlisted candidates are now set to begin an intensive six-month advanced training program at the ACC. From this training, one candidate will ultimately be selected to participate in a mission aboard the Chinese Space Station, scheduled for October or November 2026. This step represents a significant milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to join the global space community and send its first astronaut into space.

This cooperation comes as part of the Astronaut Cooperation Agreement signed in February 2025 under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Through this agreement, Pakistan became the first international partner to join China’s human spaceflight program, reflecting the strengthening of bilateral collaboration in space exploration between the two countries.

SUPARCO officials have further highlighted that Pakistan’s long-term space agenda includes plans for participation in a lunar mission set for 2026, with support from Chinese space authorities. This initiative not only underscores Pakistan’s growing capabilities in space research and exploration but also positions the country as an emerging player in international space missions.

By advancing its Human Spaceflight Program and forging strategic partnerships, Pakistan is steadily moving toward achieving its goal of sending astronauts into space and contributing to broader scientific and technological endeavors in the region.
