In a rare marriage case from Himachal Pradesh, two brothers married the same woman, reviving an old cultural tradition. The event took place in a remote village in the Sirmaur district, attracting over 100 guests.
The ceremony started on July 12 in Shillai, part of the Trans-Giri region. Sunita Chauhan married brothers Pradeep and Kapil Negi in what is locally known as a Jodidara marriage. This form of polyandry is rare but still legally recognized in Himachal Pradesh.
Sunita said she accepted the marriage willingly and respects the relationship. Both brothers expressed pride in following their tradition openly. Pradeep works as a government employee, while Kapil lives abroad.
The marriage case gained attention due to its cultural significance and unique customs. The ceremony included traditional songs, dances, and rituals. Such marriages have historically helped families keep their land intact by avoiding division among siblings.
Though polyandry is uncommon today, it remains socially accepted in some remote areas. In nearby villages, a few similar marriage cases have been reported in recent years. The Hatti community, to which the couple belongs, numbers around 300,000 people and was granted Scheduled Tribe status in 2022.
Elders in the community say the practice, though now rare, still holds social importance. Experts note that while this tradition helped preserve family property, inheritance rights for women continue to be a concern.
This marriage case highlights a unique cultural practice that continues to survive quietly in parts of Himachal Pradesh. It reflects the diversity of marriage customs in India and the ongoing balance between tradition and modern laws.
