United States President Donald Trump has warned Russian President Vladimir Putin about the ongoing war in Ukraine. He suggested Moscow could face consequences if its actions do not align with Washington’s expectations.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday, Trump confirmed he plans to speak with Putin soon. However, he noted that the Kremlin already knows his administration’s stance. “Putin knows where I stand,” Trump said. “His decision will make us either satisfied or very unhappy. If we are unhappy, you will see action.”
Putin recently repeated his willingness to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but only in Moscow. He stressed that while talks remain possible, Russia is ready to continue its military campaign if negotiations collapse.
Ukraine rejected Putin’s remarks, calling them another attempt to delay serious discussions. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said only stronger international pressure could push Russia toward real peace talks. Kyiv has made it clear that it will not accept any deal involving the loss of its territory.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy announced plans to speak with Trump on Thursday about stronger sanctions against Russia. He also welcomed early signs from Washington regarding long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.
European allies have stepped in with similar promises. French President Emmanuel Macron said several nations are ready to offer security guarantees once a peace agreement is reached. “We are prepared as Europeans to support Ukraine and its people,” Macron stated.
Trump has positioned himself as a potential mediator. He has suggested direct talks between Putin and Zelenskyy, but significant differences remain. Russia insists on keeping control of the regions it annexed, while Ukraine demands full sovereignty over its territory.
The world now waits for Trump’s expected call with Putin and Zelenskyy’s talks with European leaders. These discussions could shape the next stage of diplomacy in the Ukraine conflict.
