President-elect Donald Trump has dismissed allegations that billionaire Elon Musk wields disproportionate influence over his administration, calling such claims a “hoax” orchestrated by political adversaries. The remarks come amid criticism of Musk’s growing role in Trump’s transition team and involvement in budget negotiations.
During a press briefing, Trump praised Musk as an innovator and ally but rejected the notion of Musk holding undue sway. “Elon is a great supporter, but no, he’s not taking the presidency,” Trump said, adding humorously that Musk, being born in South Africa, is constitutionally ineligible to serve as president.

Musk’s Role in Trump’s Administration
The controversy centers on Musk’s appointment to head the proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an advisory panel aimed at reducing federal spending. Although not an official government agency, DOGE’s vague mandate and Musk’s leadership have sparked criticism from Democrats and some Republicans alike.
Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, became one of Trump’s most prominent backers during the campaign, reportedly contributing $200 million to a pro-Trump Political Action Committee (PAC). His endorsement gained attention after an assassination attempt on Trump in July.
Budget Negotiation Fallout
Criticism of Musk intensified after his involvement in recent budget negotiations. Both Musk and Trump opposed a bipartisan funding bill passed by Congress, primarily due to the absence of a debt ceiling increase. Musk took to his X platform to denounce the bill and pledged financial backing for primary challenges against lawmakers who supported it.
House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed he consulted with both Trump and Musk during renegotiations. The revised funding bill, signed by outgoing President Joe Biden, extends government funding through March 14 but leaves the debt ceiling unresolved.
While some Republican lawmakers, such as Representative Rich McCormick, have expressed unease about Musk’s influence, calling it “concerning,” others like Representative Tony Gonzales compared Musk’s involvement to that of a “prime minister.”
Democratic Concerns Over Corporate Influence
Musk’s prominent presence during Trump’s transition has alarmed Democrats, who fear corporate interests may unduly shape government policy. Critics argue that Musk’s dual role as a business magnate and policy advisor presents a conflict of interest.
In response, Senator Bill Hagerty defended Musk’s contributions, emphasizing that the billionaire’s efforts are focused on promoting efficiency in government rather than exerting control over Trump’s decisions.
As Trump prepares to take office, Musk’s role remains a point of contention, raising questions about the balance between corporate influence and public governance in the incoming administration.
