Trump Claims Modi Vowed India Will Halt Russian Oil Imports

US President Donald Trump announced that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged to stop purchasing oil from Russia, calling it a key step in the US effort to curb Moscow’s energy revenue during the ongoing Ukraine war.

Speaking at a White House press briefing, Trump said he plans to focus next on persuading China to halt similar oil purchases. He described Modi’s commitment as a “major breakthrough” in Washington’s diplomatic strategy to economically isolate Russia.

“I was not happy that India was buying oil, and he assured me today they will not be buying oil from Russia,” Trump told reporters. “That’s a big step. Now we’re going to get China to do the same thing.”

India and China have been the two largest importers of Russian crude since Western sanctions took effect after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. In September alone, India imported about 1.62 million barrels per day from Russia — roughly one-third of its total oil demand.

Indian officials have previously defended these imports as essential for energy security, stressing the need for affordable energy supplies. Analysts, however, say any shift away from Russian oil will take time to implement. Trump also acknowledged this, noting that India would need “a little time” to complete the transition.

In recent months, Trump’s administration has increased pressure on India by imposing up to 50% tariffs on Indian exports to the US, linking part of the decision to its continued trade with Moscow. The move has drawn criticism in New Delhi, which argues that other countries buying Russian oil, such as China and Turkey, have not faced similar measures.

The announcement came shortly after Trump’s nominee for US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, met Modi in New Delhi to discuss defense, trade, and technology cooperation — signaling a new phase in Washington’s diplomatic engagement with India.
