Former US President Donald Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska for a highly anticipated summit. The meeting lasted nearly three hours but ended without a formal deal to resolve the war in Ukraine. Both leaders described the talks as productive but did not share specific details.
Trump told the media, “We’ve made some headway,” but added, “There’s no deal until there’s a deal.” The main goal of the meeting was to explore ways to reduce conflict in Ukraine, but no ceasefire was agreed upon.
This was the first time a US president met Putin since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022. The summit was seen as a diplomatic win for Putin, who has faced global isolation since the war started.
After the meeting, Trump said he might delay tariffs on China linked to its purchase of Russian oil. He also suggested that a future meeting might be arranged between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, with the possibility of his involvement.
Putin, however, made no mention of such a meeting and reiterated that Russia’s demands must be met for any long-term peace. The Russian leader said he expects Ukraine and Europe to respond positively to the talks.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s government had no immediate response. Ukrainian officials expressed skepticism about any ceasefire agreement after the summit.
The conflict in Ukraine continues with heavy fighting in eastern regions. Despite the summit, there is little progress toward ending the war, which has caused thousands of deaths and widespread destruction.
Trump said he hopes for a ceasefire soon, emphasizing that the killing must stop. However, the Alaska talks ended without a breakthrough, leaving many questions about the future of peace efforts.
