Trump praises Pakistan for apprehending suspect linked to the 2021 Kabul airport bombing

US President Donald Trump has expressed gratitude to the Pakistani government for its role in apprehending a key suspect in the 2021 Kabul airport bombing, which claimed the lives of 13 American service members and numerous Afghan civilians. The suspect, identified as Mohammad Sharifullah (also known as “Jafar”), is a senior commander of the ISIS-K group and was a central planner of the attack at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport during the chaotic withdrawal of US and allied troops from Afghanistan.

In a speech to a joint session of Congress, Trump announced that Sharifullah is being extradited to the US to face trial, calling him a “monster” and asserting that this action is a step toward holding those responsible for the atrocity accountable. Trump’s remarks came during the longest speech of its kind, lasting 1 hour and 49 minutes, in which he emphasized the need for US support to be conditioned on actions that would contribute to a solution in Afghanistan.

The capture of Sharifullah follows intelligence provided by the CIA and is part of a broader effort by Washington to link future military aid to Ukraine with the return of US-made weapons, although Trump’s policies remain controversial. His comments also included a call for bipartisan unity and a reminder that halting US assistance would only benefit Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The news has been met with applause from some quarters, while it has also sparked debate over Trump’s approach to both US foreign policy and his handling of relations with Ukraine.
