Indian media reports that the new 25% tariff imposed by Donald Trump has pushed total U.S. tariffs on Indian goods to 50%. According to the White House, Trump signed an executive order enforcing the additional duty, prompting concern and criticism across Indian outlets.
Just a day earlier, Trump had announced plans to raise tariffs on India within 24 hours, stating that the existing 25% would be increased. He accused India of being an unreliable trade partner, citing its continued crude oil imports from Russia, which he claimed contribute to funding the Ukraine conflict.
India, the third-largest oil importer globally, currently sources the majority of its crude oil from Russia—a significant revenue stream for Moscow during the war.
India now faces the highest U.S. import tariffs compared to other countries. Vietnam is charged 20%, Indonesia 19%, and Japan and EU exports 15%. India’s rate has now reached 50%, doubling its original rate.
In contrast, Trump has eased trade pressure on Pakistan. Previously facing a 29% tariff, Pakistan’s rate has been cut to 19%. This revised tariff is set to be enforced starting August 7.
