Quad Summit: US President Drops India Visit Over Tariff Row

US President Donald Trump has cancelled his planned November 2025 trip to India for the Quad Summit, the New York Times reported, underscoring rising tensions between Washington and New Delhi over tariffs and foreign policy.

Earlier this month, Trump slapped an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods—raising the total new tariffs under his presidency to 50%—in response to India’s surging imports of Russian oil, which now account for 42% of its purchases compared to less than 1% before the Ukraine war.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent accused India of “profiteering” through arbitrage, buying cheap Russian oil and reselling it as refined products, calling the practice unacceptable.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is attending the SCO Summit in Tianjin, marking his first visit to China since 2018, after concluding a Japan trip where he and PM Shigeru Ishiba pledged to boost economic and security ties to counter China’s influence and US tariffs.

The Quad Summit in New Delhi—meant to gather leaders from the US, Japan, Australia, and India—now faces uncertainty, with Trump’s absence casting doubt on the bloc’s cohesion and its Indo-Pacific agenda
