U.S. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping recently held a phone call, making progress on multiple issues. Key topics included TikTok, trade, fentanyl, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The leaders agreed to meet face-to-face in six weeks during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Gyeongju, South Korea. Trump also announced plans to visit China early next year, while Xi is expected to visit the U.S. at a later date.
In a social media post, Trump said, “We made progress on many very important issues, including trade, fentanyl, ending the Russia-Ukraine war, and the approval of the TikTok deal.” However, both sides stopped short of confirming a final agreement on the app.
The phone call was the first between the two leaders in three months. Tensions appeared to ease, but Beijing’s final approval of a TikTok framework deal remains a key hurdle. The U.S. Congress had previously ordered TikTok to shut down by January 2025 unless its U.S. operations were sold by Chinese owner ByteDance.
China emphasized that companies are free to negotiate based on market rules while following Chinese laws. Meanwhile, Trump has temporarily paused enforcing the TikTok law, noting the app’s importance for social media and political communications.
Analysts suggest that both countries are carefully managing timing and optics. While Washington seeks a headline-making summit and progress on TikTok, Beijing seems satisfied with the current diplomatic dynamic.
The upcoming APEC meeting will allow both leaders to further discuss trade, security, and technology issues. Continued phone dialogue is expected before the summit.
This interaction highlights ongoing efforts to ease U.S.-China tensions while addressing global challenges and the future of TikTok in the United States.
