This follows the physically and emotionally taxing production of The Crowded Room, an Apple TV+ criminal thriller series. Holland acknowledged the toll the programme took on him as both an actor and a producer in an interview with Extra.

Holland acknowledged his strong work ethic, saying, “I’m no stranger to hard effort…However, the show did shatter me. There was a time when I needed a break and went to Mexico for a week to relax on the beach and lay low. Because of how stressful this show was, I’m now taking a year off. I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out. “I feel like our efforts were not in vain.”

Holland dived into uncharted emotional depths as Danny Sullivan, a character based on the real-life figure Billy Milligan, who suffered from dissociative identity disorder. He admitted that the experience was difficult, pushing him beyond his previous limits. The added duty of being a producer on the film added to the stress he was under on a daily basis.

“It was a tough time, for sure,” the actor said. We were going over certain feelings that I had never felt before. On top of that, being a producer and dealing with the day-to-day challenges that occur with every film set added an extra degree of stress.” While Holland stated that he enjoyed the learning curve of becoming a producer, juggling two parts and portraying a character with significant mental health difficulties proved too much for him. The actor reached a breaking point due to the show’s rigorous nature.

Holland has addressed up to Entertainment Weekly on the show’s impact on his personal life. “I was seeing myself in [the character], but it was in my personal life,” Holland recalled. “I remember having a little meltdown at home and saying to myself, ‘I’m going to shave my head.'” I need to shave my head in order to free myself of this character.’ And, obviously, we were in the middle of a shoot, so I opted not to… It was unlike anything I’d ever seen or felt before.”

Holland told EW that he has been clean for a year and four months and credits the show for helping him change his view on mental health. During the preparation for the play, the actor found it informative and transforming to explore Danny and Billy’s issues and meet with psychiatrists.

“Learning about mental health and the power of it, as well as speaking with psychiatrists about Danny and Billy’s struggles, has been something that has been so informative to my own life,” the actor stated, emphasising that he is now able to “recognise triggers” like social media that lead to stress.

Fans eagerly await the release of The Crowded Room, which promises to be a gripping and thought-provoking investigation of mental health and the complexities of the human mind, as Holland takes a well-deserved vacation from acting. It will launch on Apple TV+ on June 9th, and it stars Amanda Seyfried, Sasha Lane, Will Chase, Lior Raz, Laila Robins, Christopher Abbott, and Henry Eikenberry.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
