Tim Southee has announced his resignation as captain of New Zealand’s Test team after a disappointing two-Test series against Sri Lanka.

Reports indicate that wicketkeeper Tom Latham will take over the captaincy for the upcoming series against India, which starts on October 16.

In his statement, the 35-year-old fast bowler expressed his honor in leading the Black Caps, stating, “Captaining the Black Caps in a format that’s so special to me has been an absolute honor and privilege. I’ve always tried to put the team first throughout my career, and I believe this decision is the best for the team.”

Southee became Test captain in 2022, leading the team in 14 matches with a record of six wins, two draws, and six losses. His recent performance has raised concerns, as he took only six wickets at an average above 70 during New Zealand’s home summer against a weakened South Africa and Australia, putting his position in jeopardy. Head coach Gary Stead acknowledged Southee’s significant contributions to New Zealand cricket over nearly 17 years. The Kiwis are set to tour India next Friday, with Latham having previously captained the Test side in nine matches.
