The UN has called for an investigation into the reported abuse of women in Taliban prisons

The United Nations has called for an investigation into reports of severe mistreatment of women held in Taliban-controlled prisons in Afghanistan. Concerns have intensified following widespread allegations of abuse, including instances of sexual violence. Recently, a disturbing video allegedly depicting the gang rape of a woman in Taliban custody has circulated, reportedly used as a tool to intimidate critics of the Taliban regime, as reported by The Guardian.

According to a U.S. State Department report, instances of rape in Taliban prisons have resulted in 16 out of 90 female prisoners becoming pregnant across three Afghan provinces. Reports indicate that women in these facilities endure torture, electric shocks, death threats, sexual harassment, and coerced marriages. The UN Special Representative for Afghanistan has highlighted that sexual violence against women in detention is a grave concern. Afghan women have also spoken out, asserting that such abuses are distressingly common within Taliban-run prisons.

Since assuming power, the Taliban has imposed stringent restrictions on women’s public participation, enforced strict dress codes, and announced punishments like public floggings and stonings. Despite the dangers involved, Afghan women continue to bravely voice opposition against Taliban oppression.
