The Punjab Excise Department has made it mandatory to use smart cards for vehicle registration

The Punjab Department of Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control has mandated the use of smart cards and computerized number plates for vehicle registration. This requirement applies to registrations submitted since June 15, with the smart card system becoming compulsory from July 1, at a fee of Rs. 1,300. These smart cards, valid for one month, are being produced at a specialized facility in Lahore and will be delivered to owners via Pakistan Post. Currently, 14,619 smart cards are being prepared for vehicle and motorcycle owners in the Rawalpindi district. However, the production of computerized number plates has been halted due to quality concerns, leading owners to obtain plates from the open market.

At a recent conference, the department emphasized tax collection, setting a quarterly target of Rs. 1 billion for the motor branch. Notices have been issued for Property Tax, Luxury Tax, and Commercial Property Tax across Rawalpindi Division. A special 5% discount is available for property tax payments made in full for the first quarter (July 1 to September 30), with a 7% discount offered for online payments. New property tax notices also include a 10% increase for all taxpayers. The Director General of Excise has instructed inspectors and field staff to conduct door-to-door and market visits to ensure tax collection.
