The IT Ministry receives nominations for the CERT Council

The Ministry of IT and Telecom (MoIT&T) has made significant strides in forming the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) Council. This initiative follows the reception of nominations from academia, industry, and civil society. The ministry has since processed these nominations, moving closer to the council’s official establishment.

This step is part of the National Computer Emergency Team Rules 2023, which reflect the government’s dedication to bolstering cybersecurity across various sectors. The CERT Council will be formally constituted upon approval from the federal government.

Envisioned as the largest forum of its kind, the CERT Council will include 15 members, featuring representatives from critical ministries such as Defense, Foreign Affairs, and Interior. The Federal Secretary of the Ministry of IT and Telecom will serve as the Chairman, ensuring smooth operations and effective collaboration among stakeholders.

To foster diverse perspectives in tackling cybersecurity issues, the council will also incorporate members from academia, industry, and civil society. Additionally, it has provisions for co-opting members on a full-time or temporary basis, enabling the inclusion of expert advice and consultation as needed.

This formation marks a substantial advancement in Pakistan’s cybersecurity infrastructure. The council will serve as a consultative and advisory forum, aiding various tiers of CERTs in their roles and functions, including assessments and conflict resolution. The recent establishment of the National Computer Emergency Response Team (nCERT) unifies these efforts under a cohesive framework, further strengthening the country’s cybersecurity posture.
