Thailand Cambodia Ceasefire is now effective from midnight on July 28, 2025, according to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The announcement came after both nations engaged in mediation talks in Malaysia.

The ceasefire aims to end five days of escalating violence along their disputed border, where deadly clashes involving artillery, rocket fire, and gunfire have driven over 200,000 people from their homes. The conflict centers around an area with ancient temples claimed by both countries.

The talks were held at Seri Perdana, the official residence of the Malaysian Prime Minister. Several motorcades, some displaying American and Chinese flags, arrived ahead of the meeting, which included Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet. A helicopter was seen flying over Putrajaya as discussions began shortly after 0700 GMT.

The ceasefire initiative followed a late-night call by U.S. President Donald Trump, who urged both leaders to swiftly reach a peace agreement. Malaysia, currently chairing ASEAN, facilitated the negotiations, with officials from the U.S. State Department and a Chinese delegation present as observers.

Despite the breakthrough, tensions remained high. Thailand accused Cambodia of lacking sincerity, while Cambodia’s defense ministry alleged ongoing Thai military aggression, claiming Thailand continued to fire heavy weapons and deploy troops into Cambodian territory on the fifth consecutive day of conflict.

Both sides have expressed hope that the truce will hold, and international observers are expected to monitor compliance.
