Thailand-Cambodia Border Tensions Rise As Clashes Leave 10 Dead

Border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have sharply increased after violent clashes killed at least 12 people near the shared frontier. The incident has sparked strong accusations from both sides and raised concerns across the region.

According to Thai officials, 11 civilians and one soldier from Thailand were killed in the latest round of cross-border firing. Thailand also reported injuries and damage to homes, farms, and even a hospital in several provinces near the border.

The Thai military claimed Cambodian forces initiated the attack early Thursday by flying drones into Thai territory. They said the situation worsened when Cambodian troops used heavy weapons, including artillery and rocket launchers.

In contrast, Cambodia accused Thailand of violating a standing border agreement by placing barbed wire near a disputed temple. Cambodian defense officials said Thai forces opened fire first, leading Cambodia to defend its territory.

Both sides presented different timelines of events, adding to the confusion. Cambodia also claimed that Thailand carried out airstrikes and deployed extra troops in the area.

The rising border tensions have pushed Cambodia to seek international help. Prime Minister Hun Manet called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council. In his letter, he described Thailand’s actions as serious aggression.

Meanwhile, China has voiced concern over the situation. As a regional power and close ally of Cambodia, China urged both countries to resolve their issues through talks. Chinese authorities also advised citizens to avoid traveling to the conflict zones.

As border tensions grow, fears of further violence are rising. Diplomatic efforts are now crucial to prevent a larger conflict. Both nations are under pressure to ease tensions and return to peaceful negotiations before the situation worsens.
