The federal government has taken a formal step to challenge the recent electricity price increase. It has filed a review petition against the Rs1.79 per unit rise in the average base power tariff. The move comes as concerns grow over rising electricity bills and public pressure increases.

Officials confirmed that the Power Division has approached the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority. The request asks Nepra to review the recent tariff hike and reconsider its impact on consumers. The regulator is expected to hear the petition on January 12.

The government is seeking relief for households and businesses. Many consumers already face high living costs. Officials believe the recent tariff hike has added further financial stress. They argue that electricity prices should remain affordable across the country.

According to the review plea, the government wants Nepra to revisit the base tariff approved earlier. The tariff took effect on January 1. It applies to all state-owned power distribution companies. It also covers K Electric.

The petition highlights the need for a uniform electricity tariff. Officials say equal pricing will ensure fairness between different regions. They also believe it will help reduce confusion among consumers.

Sources within the Power Division said the tariff hike has affected both domestic and commercial users. Small businesses have raised concerns over higher operating costs. Households are also struggling to manage monthly bills.

The government’s plea stresses a balance between sector needs and public affordability. Officials say the power sector requires financial stability. At the same time, consumer protection remains a priority.

Nepra will review the arguments during the hearing. Any decision will come after examining financial data and sector requirements. The authority may accept, reject, or modify the request. If Nepra revises the tariff’s hike, new electricity rates will be issued later. The government will notify the public through an official announcement. Until then, existing rates remain in place.

Earlier, Nepra approved the Rs1.79 per unit increase after a request from power distribution companies. The regulator cited rising costs and revenue needs. The decision was applied nationwide from January 1.

Energy experts say the review shows growing pressure on policymakers. Rising tariffs has become a sensitive issue. Electricity prices affect inflation and public sentiment. The outcome of the hearing will be closely watched. Any change in the tariff hike may bring temporary relief. However, long term reforms in the power sector remain necessary.

Consumers now await Nepra’s decision. The government hopes the review will ease the burden. The final verdict could shape future electricity pricing policies. This move aligns with the federal government’s broader plan to bring relief to electricity consumers nationwide.
