Tarbela and Mangla dams hit dead level amid looming water crisis

Tarbela and Mangla Dams Reach Critical Levels, Raising Water Scarcity Concerns in Pakistan

Pakistan’s two largest reservoirs, Tarbela and Mangla Dams, have reached critical water levels, triggering concerns over an impending water shortage across the country.

IRSA Warns of 30-35% Water Deficit in Rabi Season

The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has issued an official warning to provincial irrigation departments, highlighting an expected 30-35% water shortfall for the remainder of the Rabi season.

In a formal letter, IRSA informed authorities that the situation was unlikely to improve without significant rainfall. It emphasized that water releases from the dams would be strictly regulated, ensuring that only the available supply is distributed.

Punjab and Sindh Already Facing Deficits

The letter further noted that Punjab and Sindh have already been impacted by water shortages, with Punjab experiencing a 20% deficit and Sindh facing a 16% shortfall.

To tackle the crisis, IRSA has directed provincial irrigation departments to take immediate corrective measures and adopt conservation strategies to manage the limited supply effectively.

Future Outlook: No Relief Until Rainfall

IRSA has made it clear that the ongoing water crisis will persist until substantial rainfall replenishes the reservoirs. Until then, the water distribution will remain tightly controlled to prevent further depletion.
